Green Knauf wins impact award
We are green – it’s official! Our environmental initiatives have won public recognition through the inaugural Green Construction Awards – and we were the only plasterboard manufacturer in the shortlists.
We won the Impact Award and were shortlisted in three other categories. Marketing and Business Development Director Peter Willsher received the award for our efforts to improve environmental performance in the construction sector.
Our carbon neutral plasterboard, Knauf Futurepanel, was shortlisted for the Green Innovation in Construction Materials Award, which recognises that sustainability depends on a major shift in the way materials are manufactured and used.
We were also shortlisted for Green Supplier of the Year – for reducing the impact of production and improving product sustainability – and the Recycling Award – demonstrating a fundamental overhaul of waste management.
The awards, highlight of Green Week, were presented by Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project (left). Also in the picture with Peter (centre) is Saul Townsend, Communications Manager, Chartered Institute of Building.
Peter’s nomination recognised our efforts in co-ordinating various major initiatives. These involve investment in logistics to extend the bag collection of waste plasterboard from small and medium size housebuilders, installation of a 2MW wind turbine at the Sittingbourne factory (currently awaiting planning permission), and creating an entirely new niche market with Knauf Futurepanel.
We are active on many fronts – and in addition to using some of the cleanest HGVs on the roads today, we are keen where possible to use alternatives such as river transport. This follows a successful trial run with a barge holding 14 lorry loads of plasterboard up the Thames towards the future Olympics site at Stratford. |
